Good essay. But you cannot outlaw private groups, or is it desirable to do so.

We need to think of protecting the integrity of mass communication similar to supporting the body's immune system.

It means *encouraging flow of information in all sides*, not overarching control.
It is easy to think of "destroying the swamps of fake news". But it is a wrong impulse. Totalitarian state is a greater evil than whatever swamps exist, breeding whatever germs that may be harmful.

It is not easy to build trust in a digital society, it will take a lot of time.
People who are concerned about the threats to democracy from social media, please be patient. There are no easy solutions.

If you think some law will fix it, you are wrong.
If you are a tech person who thinks an AI will fix it, you are even further wrong. --> Don't do it !
For some context on these tweets, on why building a trustworthy computational medium is so hard, please see:

Also my essay where I argued computational education of citizens is essential for supporting a democracy.

I believe computational services / social media should be studied for long-term effects on human cognition & societal health, similar to how we test pharmaceutical drugs.

Studying the biological immune system will help us build healthy cybernetic systems.
Increasingly, we will come to realize that we need to certify citizens with something like a *Driver's license* for using different internet services.

This is a deceptive but complex medium, with a lot of computational machinery behind, which most people simply don't understand.
Taking the easy way out and designing computational systems for the stupid, making them idiot-proof, is precisely why we ended up with current nightmare.

Many ideas lost: computational idealism of 60s -> Xerox PARC's UI -> simulation of paper by "windows" -> web -> social media.
It is sad, but most critiques of Facebook and how it is distorting our democracy, simply don't have the long-term perspective on why exactly we ended up with this shitty situation (with computational services).

People's memories are very short. But the arc of technology is long.
We need to think of how we can certify citizens with a driver's license for the "bicycle".

Octopus and the bicycle: two metaphors for understanding the nature of computational media.
