Don’t get me wrong… I’m not exactly sad to see Sessions go. But I am very, very worried. 1/8
It’s hard to mourn the departure of an AG who promoted mass incarceration, gleefully led the administration’s assault on immigrants, and did everything in his power to shred voting rights. 2/8
But he did one thing right: he followed the rules and recused himself from the Mueller investigation into Russia’s interference in the 2016 election. And that’s why he was forced to resign. 3/8
Trump’s goal here isn’t subtle: he wants the Mueller investigation shut down, and getting rid of Sessions makes that possible. Control over the investigation will now pass from Deputy AG Rod Rosenstein, who was protecting it, to Acting AG Matthew Whitaker, who… won’t. 4/8
The window to protect the Mueller investigation, uphold the rule of law, and prevent Trump from obstructing justice is closing… fast. 5/8
There is a bill that would prevent the Acting Attorney General from firing Mueller without cause. It’s called the Special Counsel Independence and Integrity Act. 6/8
A lot of Republican members of Congress talked about the importance of the Mueller investigation, but didn’t support the bill because they said it wasn’t necessary. The Sessions resignation is a big fat postcard to those members, covered with the words: IT’S NECESSARY. 7/8
The time is now – and it’s short – for members of Congress to put the rule of law above partisan politics and vote to preserve Mueller’s investigation. Do the right thing!! 8/8
