Just because I'm unimpressed by Dems' gains last Tuesday doesn't mean there aren't danger signs for Republicans.

There are.

Their most significant problem is not the "resistance" from the Left. It's the resistance from the Left pretending to be the Right.
Political coalitions change w/ or w/o party approval. There is no constituency for the Old GOP Guard Republican Party. Some of these haters are trying to hold onto something that no longer exists. It has not been a serious national political force since 2008.
Look at the electoral map of the U.S. House. Look where the GOP still made gains despite losing control of the chamber.

Those are Trumplican districts, where the Old Guard GOP fell shy, each try. Why? Simple. traditional GOP had a lower cap with the working class.
Over the last two years, Democrats did a great job grooming candidates to appear moderate, and courting healthcare voters. Meanwhile, the D.C. GOPe who lied to voters for 7 years, never pass on a chance to bash the guy with a message that brought them serious electoral success.
Think that doesn't have an impact? Think again. In 2016, the GOP benefited more from Donald Trump's coalition than he did from their coalition.

If I had to use an example:

John Kasich didn't vote for Donald Trump. But the Trump voter still voted for Rob Portman.
But the GOP just assumed those voters would continue to translate. They, like Democrats in 2008, took the election as an affirmation of their party. They found out the hard way two years later that it was not, and it wasn't in 2016, either.

Hence, 2018.

Bottom line: Next...
Bottom line: D.C. Democrats did a much better job navigating the coalition shift.

D.C. Republicans were too busy lecturing the only GOP candidate to win the Rust Belt since the 1980s, on how to win elections.
I'll end this thread, with this...

The only thing consistent about political coalitions is that they consistently evolve.

Mediocre political strategists will try to cobble together a winning coalition on the current map. Great ones will redraw that map, w/o the same boundaries.
Wait, I can't end this thread with the last tweet. Why? Because this story, between Kevin McCarthy and Liz Cheney, tells you everything you need to know. They want to wait out Donald Trump until they can return to the handicapped minority.

I'm not saying Democrats don't have similar problems. They sure do. But if you held an election for leader and chair among the party base, do you think Kevin McCarthy and Liz Cheney would win?

Of course not. Responsiveness isn't just good self-government. It's good politics.
Just to be fair to Kevin McCarthy, there's no doubt he's more aligned w/ Donald Trump than Paul Ryan, who was clearly FoS during that post-2016 presser.

M.r Ryan "heard the voice of America" for about 24 hours... before the voice of K Street drowned you out.
