But some businesses just do the losing money part. A critical skill is knowing the difference between the two types.
Customer-based corporate valuation (CBCV) = valuing a business on a "bottoms up" basis by valuing the customers. In a subscription business especially, this is an essential process if you want to understand if real value is being created despite a lack of current GAAP earnings.
"CBCV isn’t about being profitable from day one. It’s about variable profitability in net present value terms (while still being mindful of fixed cost overhead of course!)" Determining whether a specific business is a delicious cheesecake or a turd requires detective work.

I can't do stand-up comedy. It's an art form. It's an incredibly difficult art form. Comics tend to be smart and courageous. They're artists. I would never pretend to know how to do stand-up, but I am a human being, and I do laugh. And laughter is not inherently "good". (thread)
Once again, with Louis C.K.'s reemergence, there's this bizarre school of thought that says comedy that's offensive can't be "bad" if it makes us laugh. Somehow, the ability to induce laughter means it must be smart and insightful and productive, that it can't be harmful.
I've laughed at offensive jokes because I'm a human being, and laughter is often involuntary. There's social laughter, the voluntary laughter that folks do for a variety of reasons, and there's actual laughter: the animal mechanism in your brain that fires off when stimulated.

the music boomed through the crowded street, namjoon feeling it in his chest as he waded through the cluster of twenty somethings and teenagers to see what they were so fascinated by. when he finally gets towards the front though he understands.
there’s four of them, dancers. namjoon had seen them before, but never before a crowd this large. he hadn’t really paid attention to them, but he wasn’t sure why because with the way they were moving their hips, namjoon’s heart was racing.

MEMOIRS OF AN ABUJA #JOBSEEKER.

Today, I had a job interview by 9:00 a.m. at a prestigious engineering firm. By the looks of the sun streaming through my bedroom curtains, it was afternoon already! Why had that stupid alarm not woken me up?
In panic, I flew off the bed and ran to check my phone which lay on my reading table.

7:28 a.m., it read on the screen.
I heaved a sigh of relief; a race to the bathroom and thirty minutes later, I was ready. I whispered a prayer for success and favour and dashed out.
One heavy downpour and inevitable traffic jam later, I walked into the office at 9:17 a.m., late.

Opulent. That's the only way I can describe the office's interior. Even the air smelled rich! The thick, luxurious carpet beckoned to my feet, asking them to strip and wiggle.

45 Days Of @ElvisCostello: a twitter megathread in anticipation of the Oct 12 release date of LOOK NOW, the new LP by Elvis Costello & The Imposters

This is either a bright idea or a brilliant mistake, but this is only, this is only, this is only the beginning...
I did something similar to this 5 years ago, in anticipation of EC & @theroots' Wise Up Ghost LP, on tumblr.

(You can still find all those posts if you look, although a lot of the YouTube links etc are now dead ends. It was 40 Days Of EC then, so for 2018 I'm upping it to 45.)
Mostly I will be going chronologically from the early years right up to the present, but it feels right to start out with Costello's 2002 song, "45."
