Peter Lilley says (#BBCR4today) that zero tariffs would take minutes to negotiate on a no deal. Here’s an example of why that’s not true.
Fish have zero tariffs. And the U.K. exports much of its fish to the EU27.
But if the EU keeps zero tariffs on U.K. fish, it will want rights to fish in U.K. waters.
That issue is not going to take “minutes” to negotiate.
And of course tariffs aren’t the main issue. The main issue is regulation. And if the U.K. is no longer obliged to comply with EU rules or subject to EU enforcement mechanisms, then there *is* a fundamental change.
