/ I’m very disappointed to see this figure, thrown out by Matthew Elliott & comprehensively debunked is still been thrown about. The Comprehensive Cross Party Review of the balance between U.K. and EU Law absolutely refutes that we have been the reluctant participants in EU Law
/ It was a detailed & in depth study a) the U.K. actually drove many of th EU laws and Regs and found only one are where they might be a divergence by choice between the EU and the U.K. IT should have been publicised widely. publications.parliament.uk/pa/ld201415/ld…
/. The report further suggests that the majority businesses find the regulatory processes facilitates trade by aligning regulation. It ran to 32 separate reports across a number of competence. The Cross Party group concluded:
“The single, clear message from the review is that in none of its 32 chapters is there a compelling case for the repatriation of powers from Brussels to Westminster and Whitehall.”.
/ Roland Rudd, chairman of Business for New Europe, said: “This important review, which was thorough and comprehensive, showed the overall balance of competences to work well for Britain.
/. “Companies across the country told the review how vital it is for them that the UK stay in the EU. For example, easyJet said that it only exists as a company because the EU opened up the aviation market to low-cost providers.
/ ...”The fact is that this review was open to anybody to contribute, yet the overwhelming evidence received strongly supported the UK remaining in the EU and that an attempt to radically rewrite the treaties is neither achievable nor desirable.”
/ A Parliamentary Research Briefing, searchingnthe legal data bases said :in a 12 year period c6.8% of primary legislation and 14.1% of secondary legislation had “A rôle in implementing legislation” but that included just passing references to a specified implementation element
/ However the Comprehensive Cross Party Review pointed out that much of EU Law that IS implemented is, inturn, developed from other International Regulatory bodies that we’d have to implement anyway if we wished to trade abroad at all.
/ Norway estimated that of the reported proportion of EU law implemented nearly 80% in fact came from International regulations to facilitate common standards and trade. So of the 6.8% and 14.1% less than 25% comes from the EU & the U.K. drives much of that.
/. The real puzzle is why this deep Comprehensive Review, inviting anybody who wishes to contribute to do so, is not more widely known. SO, please do not trot that shameful figure by Matthew Elliot out again. It should never have had traction at all.
/. Businesses have repeatedly given evidence of their alarm at the problems that will arise from deregulation loss of common regulation shared across countries. Here is a simplified graph of how businesses view the EU.
/. The worst thing of all, see Grenfall Towers, is that Regulation plus effective enforcement saves lives. On the day the fire was burning on the agenda of the government backed red tape committee had on its agenda the reduction in regulation applying to cladding.
/ FINALLY a sober reminder of the benefits of regulation. This is what red tape has achieved. Be deeply grateful.
