The Keynote speaker at this event is Professor Evan Stark. He is the author of award winning book Coercive Control: How Men Entrap Women In Personal Life.
Prof Stark developed the term #coercivecontrol to help us understand domestic abuse as more than a “fight”.
Professor Stark argues that #coercivecontrol is a pattern of behaviour that seeks to take away the victim’s liberty or freedom and to strip away their sense of self. It is not just the victim’s bodily integrity which is violated but also their human rights.
#coercivecontrol is not primarily a crime of violence; it is first and foremost a liberty crime. Often the violence used may appear ‘minor’ in the eyes of the law but it is important to understand that where no physical violence is use, the fear or threat of violence is
as significant as actual physical violence and this is why it is important to understand the nature of #coercivecontrol and how it presents as a pattern of abuse over the course of a relationship.
The conference is being opened by @David_Challen the younger son of Sally Challen, convicted of murdering her husband after years of being controlled and humiliated.
@justice4women are campaigning for Sally’s appeal which is set for January 2019.
