Surely one workaround for UK citizens about to be deprived of their EU citizen rights:

1) Decide to take advantage of the liberal bilateral CTA
2) Move to Ireland
3) Naturalise
4) Get Irish passport
5) Have dual citizenship

Clearly 3) is the most time consuming part!
Deets here. Part of my point being that British people will have a much easier time moving to Ireland than any other EU country by virtue of the bilateral agreements. Or marry Irish™ citizensinformation.ie/en/moving_coun…
So if you're 18 and British: move to Ireland, go to university here, do a Masters... and you're basically done by 23?
A brain drain for passports!
UK citizens are treated differently (and arguably better) than other EU citizens because of the CTA - can't find anything prohibiting UK students using academic time as part of residency requirement, but maybe I just can't find it.

UK confirming plan to compel millions of citizens to pay to apply to keep legally established rights feels important and unprecedented. But barely a media ripple today - with a few honourable exceptions noone appears to be asking tough questions. So here are a few:
1. How is this scheme compatible with Article 8 of the ECHR, enshrined in UK law via Human Rights Act, protecting right to family life? Has Govt taken legal advice on prospects of a challenge by EU citizens? If so what did it say?
2. Why should EU citizens have to pay a fee for confirmation of existing rights legally and properly exercised?

1) OK, there are two competing bad legal takes on the position of @BritishInEurope after Brexit.

a) the bad EU won't guarantee their residence
b) the good EU can't guarantee their residence because it doesn't have competence to do so.
2) The starting point is that the EU does have competence over non-EU migration - not just Schengen (visas and borders) and asylum, but also legal and illegal migration - but it's shared.

That means that if the EU doesn't act, its Member States have power to do so.
3) To that end, yesterday's Commission no deal paper points out that *some* EU law on non-EU citizens will apply to @BritishInEurope and encourages Member States to give residence permits to "all" UK citizens under national or EU law:

Air boxing by top #UK officials is amazing. Who punching at? Unlike in London, #Brexit never been much fight in Brussels, more lament. When some urged penalty in financial settlement, EU ignored & just tabbed up #'s. Citizen rights a 2-way street. Other stuff mainly logistical..
Point again is not to take any side, but merely point out Brussels has had consistent principles, goals & negotiating positions from the start. London still has no consensus on final objective. No one I know in #EU has advocated for "no deal" but some in #UK actually do that...
Have had many many long conversations w/ top London colleagues. Am very conscious of all arguments & concerns on #UK side, incl over Northern Ireland. But even in no deal scenario, #UK will end up facing exact same choice on future relationship w/ EU as now, but w/o transition...
