11/25/48 at 3:40 to 5 pm on WPIX. Afternoon movies were rare 80 years ago, but Channel 11 showed 1935 Hitchcock for Thanksgiving Day matinee. NY TV debut 9/18/47 on WABD (as channel 5 was known in those days, named after founder Alan B. DuMont).
NY TV debut 11/25/48 at 8 pm on WATV. H. Bruce Humberstone's 1933 comedy, one of several Jefferson Pictures Corp. pre-codes distributed theatrically by RKO. M & A Alexander re-released it to theaters, then TV stations. Copyright expired 1961.
NY TV debut 11/25/48 from 8:30 to 9:45 pm on WCBS' "Film Theatre of the Air.'' Hirliman was among many independent producers whose films got their initial releases through RKO. Unity Television distributed 1936 western at first. Copyright expired 1964.
NY TV premiere 11/25/53 on WPIX's "First Show.'' Week-long run for Fedor Ozep's 1947 indie noir, distributed by J. Arthur Rank's Eagle-Lion, which had absorbed PRC and would in turn merge with Film Classics, absorbed into UA. Copyright expired in 1976.
11/25/58 at 12:30 am on WNEW's "Five Star Finale.'' New to me, Grinde's hour-long 1937 B drama explores exploitation of Southern sharecroppers. Longtime WB writer Anthony Coldeway adapted his apparently unproduced play. Anybody seen this?
US TV debut 11/25/63 from 7:30 to 9:30 pm on "NBC Monday Night at the Movies.'' With all network and local programming preempted on the day of President Kennedy's funeral, Kelly and Donen's 1952 musical (not yet considered a classic) had its bow postponed until 1/13/64.
11/25/68 on WABC's "4:30 Movie.'' 1960 "Poor man's Long Hot Summer,'' as Howard Thompson put it, appears to be Burr's last lead in theatrical feature save his US inserts for GODZILLA 1985. Lippert production's for Fox release skipped networks, syndicated to local stations.
NY TV debut 11/25/73 at 11:30 pm on WNBC's "Sunday Film Festival.'' Released by WB in black-and-white on theatrical double bill with same Brooklyn-born director's IT!. 1967 UK-made horror with Andrews defrosting Nazi zombies was broadcast on TV in its full Eastmancolor g(l)ory.
11/25/78 at noon on WNEW's "Creature Features.'' Warners bought Lourie, Harryhausen and Bradbury's independently-produced 1953 monster classic, inspired by hugely successful 1952 re-release of KING KONG. NY TV debut 10/2/61 on WOR's "Million Dollar Movie.''
11/25/83 at 11 pm on WNET. Sutherland's agreeable third film version of Booth Tarkington's 1923 play "Magnolia,'' updated for 1935 with Rogers and Hart songs. NY TV debut 10/28/63 at 12:55 am on WCBS' "The Late Late Show,'' one of Channel 2's 350 Paramount pre-48s leased from MCA
11/25/88 at 4:05 am on TNT. Glenda Farrell co-stars in one of the last pre-code newspaper movies, released in January 1934. Remade by WB as LOVE IS ON THE AIR (1937), YOU CAN'T ESCAPE FOREVER (1942) and THE HOUSE ACROSS THE STREET (1949).
11/25/93 at 3 am on WPIX. I've never seen a list of the 100 titles that Turner colorized, but only 1950 title in "pre-1948'' WB packages would seem to be an unlikely candidate, even with Bogart as a test pilot. Nice poster, though.
11/25/98 at 12:30 am on TCM. 1937 MGM stars James Stewart and Robert Young join football-themed Thanksgiving Eve lineup that began with Robert Osborne introducing THE FORTUNE COOKIE (1966) and KNUTE ROCKNE, ALL AMERICAN (1940).
11/25/63: Morning, late afternoon and late night movies, all pre-empted on NYC's TV stations the day of JFK's funeral. NY Times' Sunday arts section with week's listings was pre-printed before the assassination. PRIVATE WORLDS (1936) would have been the NY TV premiere.
PRIVATE LIVES, scheduled to repeat at 1:30, completed its truncated Wednesday-to-Tuesday weekday run on WOR's "Love Story'' on Tuesday. THE CRIMSON PIRATE started its Monday through Friday run on "Movie of the Week'' one day late. HAWAII CALLS also scheduled for 1:30 repeat.
