The natural progression of autonomous driving would be collective ownership of cars, similar to bike-sharing in cities.

This tech can revolutionize real estate pricing & make urban housing affordable to all.

But do we get it? No, we will get personal cars for show-off (Tesla).
The story of technological progress is a story of continued betrayal of mankind. Consciously avoiding directions that will reduce the pain of people (and of nature overall), but force-fitting the technology into the same old market mechanisms which are the root cause of all pain.
The most commonsensical way of looking at autonomous drive vehicles is to view them as the last mile connectivity for a public transport system, whose central backbone are electrified trams and trains.

Similar to how WiFi gives end-user connectivity to an optical fiber network.
But look at who is investing in autonomous vehicles?

The same old, the same old.

Why will they support a tech evolution that results in radical minimization of private car ownership?

Autonomous electric drive is already achieved for short distances in premapped urban zones.
Does anybody have any idea how to break this jinx? How can money be raised for a technology move that will radically *reduce* car ownership?

Any existing tools for how to finance that, except top-down dictation from the government?

I am genuinely curious. Please let me know.
