Crucial point in an insightful thread. When we try to sell modern, progressive positions to certain groups of voters, we should be aware that a certain segment of them will not vote for a female or POC candidate even if their heart’s desire is promised.
White male identity politics is not new, and it’s not going away any time soon. In fact, it seems to be on the rise, especially in rural areas.

So am I saying we should only run white males? God, no.
I’m saying that even centrist and left-leaning publications relentlessly center white males, especially rural white males, as if their gut reax to something embodies the national mandate. They are not a majority. They are one faction in a diverse America.
And even rural areas (I live in one) are far more diverse than a media picture would recognize. Red states do not vote 100% or even 80 or 75% GOP. They have a decided split, but it’s more like 60/40 or 55/45. Even the REDDEST. That’s a lot of ppl. Make us visible.
How many thinkpieces sought out teachers? Or social workers? Or mothers of young children? Or drug addiction counselors? These folks are the lifeblood of rural America, and they are far more likely to be progressive than some random retiree you find idling in a diner.
You should check out @sarahkendzior’s book View From Flyover Country, as it really brings this point home. There is diversity everywhere. There are people who care about people everywhere. And they are just as much rural America as ranty Uncle Bob.
