A modest proposal...
If the referendum gets overturned, let’s mark the day we kicked xenophobia into touch with a new national holiday, Europe Day, and tie it into a package of civics lessons and discussions in schools.

By seeding new ways of thinking from the bottom up,
it should be possible over time to detoxify the national debate, and give people a greater appreciation for our big EU club.

(NOTE: I am *not* saying that the EU’s failings should be ignored. But they should be contextualised, and presented alongside its many successes.)
(Added: it might also be useful to think about teaching more about the four nations that make up the UK.)
