The 21-aircraft Missing Man Maneuver that the US Navy will perform in the next hour or so is going to be EPIC to watch. 41 is being brought from the train station to the burial site now.

If someone can bring together all the special moments of this #Remembering41 week it would be a beautiful documentary to watch. There have been so many moments.

The train journey was so nice. I am glad the family are about to have private time without the cameras.
I'm part way through preparing my photo threads covering the funeral week. The more photos available, the longer it takes to prioritize which ones to share. It will be worth the wait.

Here is an iconic photo from inside the train today. Lots of people lined the route.
The 21-aircraft Missing Man Maneuver was everything I hoped it would be, and more.

I will link a decent video of it soon. I watched it on a local TV channel and saw it all but apparently several national cable networks cut it off before the best part. So clueless of them.

Also, ...

I want you to see the context in which the flyover occurred. The band played the national anthem while servicemen held the casket. After the flyover they played Holy, Holy, Holy.

A well edited video combining that scene with the flyover will be good.

(1) Officer Ronil Singh was a Fijian-Indian who migrated legally to the US & become a police officer. There has been a brain drain of Fijian-Indians over the past 30 years bc of racism & repeated coups. Many came to NZ... they are welcomed here, usually pillars of the community.
(2) The most recent coup in Fiji was in 2006. Naval Commodore Frank Bainimarama overthrow the lawfully elected govt at the barrel of a gun. Despite murder and repression, the international community "forgot" all about it & even gave him a UN role. Of course.
(3) In fact, Fiji's violent dictator, Frank Bainimarama, was head of the UN's climate change conference for 2017. How nice.

(1) Secretary Mattis' resignation letter of December 20, 2018.

Source: an ABC reporter at the Pentagon. Hopefully this is the real letter.

Assuming it is, here are my thoughts on it:
(2) I love, love, love General James Mattis and always have, from the moment I first learned who he is. That will never change.

I have two possible explanations for why he chose to mention "respect for allies" & being harder on adversaries in this letter.
(3) Two MAIN possible explanations. Sure, there will be others.

It could be 4D chess kabuki theater, he's certainly capable of it.

Or, it could be his genuine feelings and desire to distance himself from some of Trump's actions. Sad.

His above quote resonated with me so I want to "unpack it" a little.

I am a giant fan of @sapinker. An incredible mind, wrote The Stuff of Thought -a book I oft go back to. (I wish he would engage in fight against Trump, though). Premise of that book: words are thoughts, analyzing words teaches us about human minds.
As a wordsmith, advocate, politico, I am permanently enraged by the Republican ability to dominate the discussion with words, while Dems try to do good but struggle to get their message across. Trump whipped all smart people with dumb but winning words. The "wall" "caravan"
Tonight's thread: Russia, China, North Korea and Iran (at least) have decided they cannot win a military/kinetic/physical fight against NATO, so they have adopted information/cyber/asymmetric/special tactics instead. Most westerners have no conception and no words to capture.

The @IAF_MCC will need to retire 11 MIG sqdns by 2030 or around 198 jets , another 200 jets retire ~2035. We need to replace 400jets to maintain current lvls by 2035. For 42 sqdns add 200 jets . @RahulGandhi pls can you tell us how you'll cover that with @HALHQBLR 1/n #Rafale
The NDA plan is to have @HALHQBLR build at least 250 #LCA variants in three lines ( two lines funded by #Modi ) with each line building 8jets/annum starting 2020.
Another 350 #aircraft will have to come from 1-2 other privately owned firms or be imported. 2/n
If we kill private #military #aircraft #manufacturing today we will have to import ~300 jets in the next 10-15 yrs which will cost #India anything between 45-60$bn . Each 1$bn invested creates at least 6000 jobs today , this import alone will cost us 360,000 jobs 3/n

I find myself increasingly overwhelmed by the idea that nothing we do anymore matters. The world is overheating and humans are too late to stop it. Our planet is dying and we're fighting about whether to put a sexual predator on the Supreme Court.
We cannot even agree to not put immigrant children in detention camps. We're not going to rise to the challenge of reordering our global economy to avoid a climate cataclysm, especially as refugee crises/global instability cause more governments to swing to the right.
We are speeding off a cliff while unsuccessfully begging the driver to ease off the gas, just a tiny bit.

I know there's some intrinsic value to being hopeful and hoping for the best but, man, kudos to anyone who can stay strong while already knowing how our story ends.

Tonight's #VintageMagTweets come from this amazing stack of Women's Monitoring Network home-made magazines. They date from between 1981 and 198, though I think the group was active outside those dates.
This was their brief: to choose a date, then get women from all over the country to spot sexist or misogynistic items in national and local publications, cut them out and post them to the WMN for compilation.
The group was methodical in their approach, and the result is a revealing snapshot of attitudes to women as portrayed in the print media in the early 80s.

Jimin wouldn’t allow himself to be trapped on his shift for any longer than necessary.

“Go, go,” Taehyung hurried, taking Jimin’s apron to let him slip out from behind the counter more quickly. Jimin decided he could get the grounds out from under his nails at home.
This morning had been absolute hell. Two girls ordered seven drinks, Jimin made them all only for them to say they were supposed to be with almond milk.

‘Oh I’m so sorry,’ was he all he had legally been allowed to say at the time, while his mind had far more colorful ideas.
With Jimin officially clocked out, he slumped on the customer side of the now empty service counter, looking to his friend with tired eyes.

“You wanna grab dinner later?”
“I can’t, remem—?
“Ah, right...”

Jimin’s disappointment vanished as Taehyung suddenly smiled to himself.
