Hey @mikeyface do you ever find yourself minding your own business only to have it hit you like a ton of bricks how significant and progressive and weird of a show I Love Lucy was for its time? That happened to me today and hoo boy.
They showed an interracial marriage on TV before it was even legal in all of the US (after many arguments with the network over whether it would be ‘realistic’, despite Ball and Arnez having been married IRL for a decade at that point)
Ball was this awesomely intelligent and talented woman playing an intelligent and talented housewife that wanted more out of life and was willing to hatch whatever wild/unconventional plan she needed to rise above and make it in show business
It actually finished its 6 season run just 5 months before Leave It To Beaver premiered. And is often hailed as the greatest sitcom of its time. Such a strange and beautiful thing to have occurred at such an unexpected time in history.
As a kid I never thought much of it. I always just thought of it as the show my red headed grandmother was in love with. Thinking about it now I feel like I suddenly understand her in a much deeper way than I ever did while she was alive.
