We need to grade timber because it is variable - indeed there is a lot of variation within a single tree. This is not unique to timber though. We never have perfect knowledge of any engineering materials - even the man-made ones.
But it's not as simple as assessing the density (I wish it was). Density is often not a useful predictor of wood properties like strength and stiffness. We measure it because (we think) it is simple to measure at all stages - but we should be careful not to think it the goal.

Reading Robert Jackson Bennett's "City of Stairs", which, normally at this point I'm done with fantasy/scifi by white guys, but I was in the mood for noir and the description sounded fascinating. Plus, female lead character. It's... an uneasy read.
One one hand, after I bought it I noticed the main blurb was by Brent Weeks, which normally would make a book a hard no for me, but on the other hand, I really was feeling noir and political intrigue, so I forged ahead.
So, first off, the good things:

The main character, thus far, is not sexualized/objectified, and is awesome. She's barely described physically, other than what she's wearing, which is largely a disguise.

1. "Fire and Fury: Inside the Trump White House" by Michael Wolff. Yes, I hate-read this book in a matter of days. Problematically, Bannon comes across as an articulate, insightful source and not an arch nationalist parasite. Will Wolff's depiction be hagiography in the future?
2. "The Invention of the White Race, Volume 1: Racial Oppression and Social Control" and "The Invention of the White Race, Volume 2: The Origin of Racial Oppression in Anglo-America" by Theodore Allen. Who knew how important Bacon's Rebellion (1676) was to the history of racism?

I did something similar to this 5 years ago, in anticipation of EC & @theroots' Wise Up Ghost LP, on tumblr.

(You can still find all those posts if you look, although a lot of the YouTube links etc are now dead ends. It was 40 Days Of EC then, so for 2018 I'm upping it to 45.)
Mostly I will be going chronologically from the early years right up to the present, but it feels right to start out with Costello's 2002 song, "45."
