X : Do you think the world of open source is dead in serverless?
Me : Oh, quite the opposite. There'll be a rich vein of the adjacent possible, the unexplored in which open source can flourish. From support to services including provision of functions. But we have to adapt.
Unfortunately some will hang onto their product mindsets for too long. You see this in places with current licensing efforts. A more useful way is to consider that open source software didn't depend upon open source hardware. The potential for open source on Lambda is ... huge.
X : But won't AWS just chew up successful function on Lambda under ICL?
Me : You mean ILC - blog.gardeviance.org/2014/03/unders… ... and yes, you're going to have to do better than rent extraction. Key will be the speed at which you respond and move around the strategy cycle.
X : How can we improve our speed?
Me : Well, by this I think you mean how can we improve our MttR (mean time to respond) for changes in the market? If so, look to getting your doctrine sorted out before anything else.
X : Should we adopt Pioneer - Settler - Town Planner?
Me : Have you sorted out your doctrine?
X : No
Me : Then No. Ditto any organisational, culture or other major change. Get your doctrine sorted first.
