Yesterday I asked those who think Russian social media swayed votes to highlight which posts they see as most effective. () () No one has, here or elsewhere. Thankfully NYT has compiled the most popular posts: nytimes.com/2018/12/17/us/…
This one got 640,390 ‘Shares’:
This one about Jesus "garnered the most likes of any [Russian] Instagram post before the election." Maybe all of those 87,000 likes gave Trump the victory in Wisconsin, Michigan, Pennsylvania?
This one dated November 23, 2016 -- two weeks after the election -- contains "authentic video footage, which circulated widely on the web" showing "three white police officers hold down a black man and one officer punches him repeatedly in the head."
This from June 2017 was "aimed at African-Americans," and "essentially apolitical." Doing so helps "build a loyal audience, essentially preparing the ground for whatever future political message the Russian government may want to spread."
More highlights of the Russian propaganda campaign that may have decided the 2016 election: this one of a gun-wielding Yosemite Sam "was the most-shared post on Facebook":
For all of the certainty that Russian social media posts impacted the 2016 election, I've yet to see anyone cite which posts were most effective towards this outcome. The IRA's top FB post to mention Clinton pre-election was a conspiratorial screed that barely mentioned her:
New Knowledge report has a section on the Russians' "Asset Development": "Recruiting an asset by exploiting a personal vulnerability," they write, "…is a timeless espionage practice." This is their first example of this espionage practice. Unclear if it yielded any assets:
