This is excellent news for marketers.
Four Reasons
1) Harder for Google to take away clicks/dominate long tail queries, creating more opportunities for others.
2) More ranking chances for smaller, niche sites, creating growth paths for more companies (vs. the powerful winning everything)

3) Long tail searches tend to have higher engagement, CTR, & conversion (b/c those searchers are more specific about what they want)
4) KW research in these arenas rewards diligent, thoughtful SEOs & content creators, creating oppty for those who put in real effort

3) Sort through pages of results, adding names+URLs to spreadsheet

5) Go to YouTube & repeat 2+3
6) Go to Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, Reddit, etc. & repeat 2+3
7) Research every line on your spreadsheet w/ estimated reach numbers, contact info, etc.

8) Use SimilarWeb, Jumpshot, Comscore, or (god forbid) Alexa to get relative traffic numbers for sites
9) Add DA/PA/@followerwonk Social Authority/other influence metrics
10) Filter spreadsheet by best guess criteria
11) Create outreach plan

Contrarian take on the "marketers need to be early adopters" advice: I think it can pay to personally get passionate about and interested in new tech/trends, but honestly, there's SO much opportunity in the fundamentals: storytelling, positioning, basic channels+tactics... /1
...that I think telling your team or your clients to drop what they're doing and invest in VR, AI-powered marketing, voice answers, chatbots, etc. is often doing a disservice to your results. Marketing is, by definition, a field where you should follow your audience /2
If *your* customers, potential customers, & their influencers aren't on Snapchat/don't use VR headsets/don't get value from chatbots/etc. you probably shouldn't be investing there. 99% of the time, you're probably ignoring some marketing basics that could move the needle /3

Doc Searls' piece: blogs.harvard.edu/doc/2018/05/12… has been getting a lot of attention. Some thoughts:
1) Adtech is a space in which a lot of companies actually make money. To be a "bubble," it would need to have a higher-than-normal % of firms that raised lots & never became profitable.
2) AdTech has enabled some fraudulent advertising, but that's not the core feature. The core is more effective, targeted, personalized ads that are easier to buy/sell/scale. GDPR won't kill that. Will some providers need to jump through more hoops? Sure. But it's here to stay.
3) One of his points is: "Adtech incentivizes hate speech and tribalism by giving both—and the platforms that host them—a business model too," but he doesn't explain why adtech does this more than classic advertising nor how the Guardian piece he links to relates to this. 🤨

Of course, a caveat, this isn’t a problem for a lot of econ.

Where preferences are in fact fairly stable and safely taken as exogenous.

Eg firms, for the most part, maximize profits. Investment bankers like making more money. Consumers want cheaper milk.

Earlier on #eNCA403 from the @StateCaptureCom with Dan Moyane and crossing back to @UvekaR. Mzwanele Manyi resumes this morning, at his third day of speaking under oath. Proceedings are now in session.
#StateCaptureInquiry Chairperson Deputy Chief Justice Raymond Zondo says he will address issues around the inquiry later on. Advocate Vincent Maleka greets Manyi who says, “Morning Mr Maleka, before we start...” Manyi says he wrote to the inquiry on some housekeeping issues.
#StateCaptureInquiry “Mr Maleka’s posture actually confirmed my fears,” says Manyi. He says Maleka’s posture was prosecutorial, not inquisitorial and claims he is being treated as an accused, “here I am here treated as a hostile witness, so to speak” and he does not know why.

Kindly pardon me henceforth if I don’t respond to partisan jibes and rhetorics. The acronyms have no meaning to me. The political elites, enlitened (educated) elites, upper class with generational wealth & the people in general are the known classes in Nigeria in the real sense.
So permit me as usual to provide the missing perspective on national issues void of partisan coloration. I’m well aware that those whose sentiments are not caressed will always scream blue murder but my tweets will hit the conscience of those it’s meant for (HNIs & the Rational).
A few colleagues abroad were briefing me on the #Amistice and I notice a few citizens were wondering why our President wasn’t in the picture with other world leaders. No worries. We weren’t invited period. Our President was only invited to the Paris Peace Forum. #FactCheck

Thread/Rant: So McRaven Wants His Own Security Clearance Revoked?

1. It’s been all over the news: the SEAL admiral the “oversaw” the 2011 Navy SEAL raid in Pakistan the killed Osama bin Laden comes out in support of John Brennan(!).
2. Brennan, of course, had his security clearances revoked by the Trump Administration on Wednesday. Despite the near-uniform caterwauling the bought-and-paid-for legacy media about how “wrong” @POTUS was to do this, there were indeed AMPLE reasons.
3. This opinion piece lays out some of the rationale; I suspect we’ll find out a lot more reasons before we’re through with Brennan as evidence of the seditious conspiracy continues to come out. Here are a couple of excerpts:
