Quick thread about C-UAS for civilian infrastructure, hope the #Gatwick incident helps to discard a few of the grifters promoting gimmicks 🤦🏻‍♂️

First, find and ID suspicious drones, forgot about radars, you can’t have them in a lot of places (close to schools, cell towers...) 1/?
And for airports they are an extra problem and won’t tell you what’s exactly that “blip”, nor are good to track anything approaching too close to the ground. What you need? Passive detection, 24/7, 360º, all-weather... check @HGHInfraredSyst and their Spynel systems 2/?
So you find “something” getting into your restricted area, put the cameras on it (or them) and confirm that shouldn’t be there, now what? Jamm it? Yeah... forgot about it in civilian areas and even worse in airports. GPS spoofing? Again... forgot about that near any airport 3/?
Those solutions are “ok” if you’re dealing with slightly modified commercial drones in a combat area, not where you can cause the drone to fall onto someone’s head, or worse, induce an error on a landing airliner.
And those “counter-drone guns”? All eye-aimed so if the drone 4/?
Is moving fast AF, at hi/lo altitude or moving through buildings you will need the guy with best eyesight in the world, plus any drone can be modified to bypass these jammers.
What you can use? Interceptors able to reach + CAPTURE the suspect drone to take it to a safe place 5/?
Why capture and not just crashing onto the suspect drone? Well, as @N_Waters89 mentioned in a thread a couple days ago, just imagine a drone crashing into a stadium while packed with explosives or chemicals, better capture it, deposit the drone in a secure container and let 6/?
Forensic experts work on it (which is the best way to identify and track the persons behind it, same approach as with IEDs).
But what drone to use as an interceptor? A good approach is a hybrid quadcopter, able to take off from a van or roof but also to reach high speeds 7/?
Now you have something able to passively detect and ID an incoming drone, you’re able to reach it for further checking (even to pursuit it for 20-30m if tries to escape) and to capture + secure it for a proper investigation. Cons? You need to develop a good automation process 8/?
And still need a bunch of good drone pilots (salaries, training, retention...) and some type of capability to deal with swarming attacks, but for those I guess the best approach is to mount HPEM systems on interceptors (unless they go with a Shilka parked in Heathrow) 9/9
