12/31/48 from 9:20 to 10:40 pm on WCBS' "Film Theatre of the Air.'' Benny Goodman vocalist Tilton plays chatty jukebox "operator" in ubiquitous Newfield's 1944 Poverty Row musical, listed as SWING LADY. NY TV debut 8/14/47 on WCBS.
12/31/53 at 6 pm on WPIX. Anyone hoping for the 1930 Bert Lahr/Ethel Merman musical with this title (all that was listed) would be greeted by veterans Gorcey and Hall returning to the old neighborhood in Beaudine's six-day wonder for producer Sam Katzman, released in 1944.
12/31/58 on WNEW's "10 O'Clock Movie.'' Channel 5 usually repeated its morning movie in afternoon, but this was apparently final run for Clemens' 1938 B about an insurance adjuster. Joan B's younger sister is best remembered for her role as Gillis' wife on "The Life of Riley.''
12/31/63 on WNEW's "10 O'Clock Movie.'' There was a 1:30 reprise on "The Late Lunch Movie'' for Eugene Forde's Shanghai-set 1937 Fox programmer, one of many that migrated en masse to WNBC's "Movie 4'' and "Great Great Show.''
12/31/68 at 8 am on WABC's "Movie of the Day.'' Republic Rhythm Riders were moonlighting from Rex Allen westerns for their appearance in 1952 Canova comedy that was originally going to be shot in Cinecolor.
12/31/73 at 10:30 pm and approximately midnight on WNET. Silent New Year's Eve double feature. Notorious Mary Nolan is Chaney's leading lady in Browning's WEST OF ZANZIBAR (1926), remade in 1932 as KONGO with Walter Huston in his original stage role played by Chaney.
12/31/78 at 5 pm on WOR. Shavelson's 1957 biopic of a disgraced 1920s mayor is one of Hope's better late movies, sadly long out of circulation though owned by his estate.
12/31/83 at 1 am on WNEW. Unlike other high-profile MGMs that migrated to WNEW and WNBC, 1932 Oscar winner appears to have been off New York City television altogether between the end of its first run on WCBS in 1966 and the beginning of its second run on WCBS in 1972.
12/31/88 at 12:30 am on WNET. Nugent's seminal 1933 Paramount screwball (based on Gertrude Tonkonogy's Broadway play with Ruth Gordon, Brian Donlevy and Elisha Cook Jr.) was a great way for the PBS flagship to start the new year. NY TV debut 4/16/62 on WCBS' "Late Late Show.''
12/31/93 at 7 pm on American Movie Classics. Glorious 1933 oddity that first teamed Fred and Ginger (in support). NY TV debut 8/13/61 on WOR's "Million Dollar Movie'' with three Sunday broadcasts only, as part of a "Great Movies of the Past'' week of mostly pre-codes.
12/31/98 at 1:30 am. The City University of New York's cable access channel was showing 1937 aviation thriller by future Selznick contractee Stevenson starring wife Anna Lee, also featured in this unusual poster.
Another striking, if somewhat less provocative poster.
