/ The 2018 Bioenergy Review is the most complete, authoritative review of policy and technology options for the UK since the government 2012 bioenergy strategy. It is dense, detailed and very well-worth studying in depth. theccc.org.uk/wp-content/upl…
/ The primary conclusion for most people will be that all types of bioenergy can provide *at most* 15% of UK energy demand in 2050. This is authoritative: from the UK government Committee of Climate Change.
/ The most important new consolidated data is this diagram: bioenergy is of most use when it sequesters carbon, not when it displaces fossil fuel:
/ (This hypothesis was first raised at the Chatham House discussion on international biomass resource and governance for BECCS in London in January 2018 hoffmanncentre.chathamhouse.org/article/bettin… ).
/ Since the value is in the carbon, not the energy, we can expect steady rises in the prices of all bioenergy feedstocks (page 115) theccc.org.uk/wp-content/upl…
/ ..which means that the common assumption that trees are felled primary for construction timber will no longer be true, and that policies will need to change dramatically to allow for that.
/ Chapter 5: "What is the role of biomass in meeting UK carbon targets" is the meat of the report (pp112-154). It is hard to digest all the implications in fewer than a few days study even if you are familiar with all the background. theccc.org.uk/wp-content/upl…
/ One serious quibble: too much use of "Primary Energy Demand" when end-use efficiences are very different. That metric overstates the importance of all combustion technologies when "Final Energy Demand" is what matters.
/ and a definite error (probably editorial glitch): This is simply wrong. CO2 is CO2.
