Big POW launches are so much more fun than ICO's selling out quickly.
Everyone actually CAN join.
It's fair, true market at its best.

Last year we had $RVN, $TUBE, $VBK, $XHV, $MCM and others (sorry if I forgot your fav bag)
I'm so excited about POW lately. It's a much more mature scene due to the experience users have gathered over the years. It has a longer history, track record and infrastructure.

ICO's on the one hand have proven to be a problematic model due to securities laws.
POW projects on the other hand can slap on a founders reward, or build their own farms, mine their own coins and be exempt from these legal hurdles.

I think many projects are realizing that it's preferable to have their own chain, which can later be swapped to POS if that is the system they actually prefer (take what $TUBE is doing for example, or the $VEIL plans).

A developer launching their POW on Bitcointalk quietly, later building up the marketing material etc., while mining quietly is so so undervalued. THIS is how $RVN started - the only thing they showed in their ANN was a whitepaper of their new algo. That was it. Look at it now.

POW can underpromise (to quietly accumulate a stake) and overdeliver (to build hype and community).
ICO has to overpromise (to raise moneyz) and is prone to underdelivering (because they can code form Bahamas).

The incentives are backwards with the ICO model.
