Physical barriers exist over most federal lands that are on the US/Mexico border. Natural barriers create severely restricted terrain for dismounted movement over the rest.
This is the best distillation of our border security efforts I’ve seen.

Now, a military cliche is that an unobserved obstacle is no obstacle at all.

We get after that problem set through aerostats and drones. Ideally we’d have ground moving target indicator (GMTI) radars that can cross cue to full motion video (FMV) along known infiltration routes
The issue (as I see it) is how to allocate manpower across a vast non-permissive environment. Because again, any fortification can be tunneled or breached or oer’perched.
Most trafficking of drugs and people takes place at ports of entry, so call me stupid but that’s where we should increase funding and manpower. Yes, barriers make sense there.
When you get out into the boonies you need to create reaction time and maneuver space for the BP. That’s done with more and better intelligence surveillance and reconnaissance. Because, again, obstacles are easily bypassed and breached. We’re a smart species.
And oh by the way, this is policy rather than tactics, but more and better trained BP agents can help stop people from ya know, dying as they try to cross the desert.
A wall can’t take a request for asylum or render aid to a toddler or arrest a drug trafficker.
Border security is

A. Better than it’s been in years

2. Accomplished by intelligent use of manpower

and

D. Primarily a problem of policy (guest worker programs, temporary visas) rather than physical security.
That last bit was a Home Alone reference
