Today is a day for celebration. I’ll be on the Hill, congratulating heroes. First stop, @ewarren. Next, @NancyPelosi. Final swearing-in event will he with @AOC. So much in between. Full of gratitude for these tough, brilliant women, and the movement that lifted them to power.
MoveOn’s DC squad for the day, heading to the Hill for swearing in.
Senator-Re-elect @ewarren walks in with @SenMarkey at her jam-packed swearing-in reception. Crowd explodes.
Warren starts by thanking a man “who married a young divorcee with a red station wagon, two young kids, and a small dog who bit. Bet you never thought we’d end up here.” Big applause for her husband Bruce.
“It’s not enough to support one bill or another bill. This country needs structural change.” Exactly right from @ewarren
“We need structural change in our economy, so workers can organize and fight for their rights. We need to change politics, and that means defending our democracy. The fundamental question is who our government is going to work for—the rich and powerful? Or everyone?” – @ewarren
For her swearing in reception, @NancyPelosi chose the one place in Washington where she knew there was absolutely zero chance she’d run into Donald Trump: the Library of Congress.
“We treat every person with respect not because they are Democrats, but because we are Democrats.” – @NancyPelosi
Pelosi said “We’ll, here I am, gonna be s”Speaker again—woman Speaker—“ and then the crowd started cheering so loud she had to pause her speech.
So yeah. This swearing in thing is actually happening. You can exhale.

So proud of everyone who fought to save health care—and then elect a Speaker who believes in expanding it.
The @LittleLobbyists were front and center in the fight against ACA repeal, sharing their stories an making the stakes real. Now they’re helping swear in @NancyPelosi, who stood with them every step of the way.
Aaahhh!!!
Watching @NancyPelosi get nominated for speaker from her swearing in reception room, surrounded by activists and staffers who’ve fought tirelessly for this moment—and who are already planning the fights to come to make this a better country and world.
“House Democrats are down with NDP” – @RepJeffries (means something different in Canada)
Members of Congress reading this right now: please put down your phone and go vote for Pelosi for Speaker.
What’s happening now: Alphabetical reading of Reps and their votes for Speaker.
“Ocasio-Cortez: Pelosi. Omar: Pelosi. ... Pelosi: Pelosi.”
In other news, the Library of Congress is ridiculously gorgeous.
We’ve got ourselves a new Speaker, folks.
If anyone ever tells you that you can’t run as a no-apologies progressive in the Midwest, tell them about my former boss Sherrod Brown.
“The real change isn’t going to take place here in the United States Senate. It’s not going to take place in Washington. It’s going to take place when millions of people stand up. And they’re already starting to stand up.” – @BernieSanders
At Bernie’s reception, got into long policy conversations about Medicare for All, wealth inequality, and the GOP tax bill. Also, selfie.
So excited to meet, in real life, one of my heroes on Twitter: @ebruenig. Funny thing: online, we’re exactly the same height.
Chuck Schumer popped into Tammy Baldwin’s reception to give what he promised would be a ten second speech. Full transcript: “The Senate loves Tammy Baldwin!”—to the delight of the room.
I’ve been a @tammybaldwin fan (and campaign volunteer!) since I was in high school and she was a Wisconsin state legislator. So great to celebrate her swearing in today.
Tina Smith, D-MN, didn’t plan to be a US Senator—and she’s already a terrific one. Congrats on the re-elect, @TinaSmithMN!
The event for @Deb4CongressNM and @sharicedavids—the first two Native American women ever elected to Congress—was supposed to be at the Museum of the American Indian. But then Trump went and shut down the government. So now it’s at a Capitol Hill hotel... and still great.
“It’s a great day to be indigenous!” – Rep. Deb Haaland
“We’re going to have more than 100 women serving in the House—95 of them women,” says Speaker @NancyPelosi, which is a very fun phrase to write
“For me, it’s really about taking down these corporate billionaires. It’s about people like us running. We’ve got this amazing beauty and fire. I didn’t have to change a thing about myself. And a majority African-American and white district elected me.” – @RashidaTlaib
