1/ It's fascinating how white racists like Paul nostalgize the days of "non-diversity" in schools, and suggest schools are now cesspools of violence and misconduct bc fewer whites/more POC, but actually violence in schools today is down considerably from years past
2/ From 1992-2016, the # of violent victimizations at schools dropped from 1.6 million per year to about 450,000 annually, thus, the violent victimization rate in U.S. schools fell 72 percent since the early '90s...even as the schools became considerably less white...
3/ As the annual report, Indicators of School Crime and Safety, demonstrates (in its 2017 edition, released in 2018) this decline in criminal behavior/victimization held for all racial and ethnic groups, and was visible in city, suburban and rural schools in equal measure...
4/ Also, the image of urban (mostly POC) schools as hotbeds of criminal victimization compared to their whiter counterparts is false. In 2016, the victimization rate at urban schools was 23 per 1000 students. In rural schools the rate was a comparable 20 per 1000 students...
5/ Racists think schools are typically filled with weapon-carrying delinquents and gang members, but even as schools and the country have become less white, weapons possession on campus (and in general) has dropped among youth, of all colors...
6/ From '93-'15, students carrying a weapon in past month (not just on campus) fell from 22 to 16%. For whites from 21 to 18%, 4 blacks from 28 to 12% & for Latinx from 24 to 14%. So by '15 whites were 45% more likely than blacks & 29% more likely than Latinx 2 carry a weapon..
7/ And on campus, from 1993-'15, weapons possession fell from 12% to only 4% of students (a decline of 2/3), falling for whites from 11 to 4%, for blacks from 15 to 3% and for Latinx from 13 to 5%...meaning carrying on campus is basically level across racial lines...
8/ Bottom line, when racists say the country & schools are getting more dangerous & dysfunctional bc they are becoming less white & more black and brown they don't know what the hell they're talking about. Or they do but purposely lie to push their white supremacist bullshit...
