The NC Division of the United Daughters of the Confederacy was well-connected to the world of higher education a few years after #silentsam was installed at UNC. Let's take a look at the names of the people who were leading the Chapel Hill chapter in 1917. #NCUDC
NCUDC President Mrs. W. S. Long was Mary Virginia Gaskins Ames, married to William Samuel Long, founder & first President of Elon College.
Vice-President Mrs. F. P. Venable was Sallie Charlton Manning, daughter of former UNC Trustee and law professor John Manning, sister of medical school dean Isaac Manning, and married to Francis Preston Venable, UNC President from 1900-1914.
Secretary Mrs. J. S. Moffatt was probably married to UNC English Professor J. S. Moffatt, Jr.
Treasurer Mrs. A. B. Roberson was Cornelia Adeline Stone, married to Dr. Abner Benton Roberson, a prominent local doctor who owned a drugstore at the corner of Franklin & Columbia.
Registrar Mrs. Fred Patterson was Blanche Pickard Patterson, daughter of prominent Chapel Hill landlord W. W. Pickard and married to former UNC football star Fred Geer Patterson. newspapers.com/clip/5346890/w…
Custodian Mrs. A. S. Barbee was Mary Jane Parker, married to former Chapel Hill Mayor (1907-1911) Algernon S. Barbee.
Historian Miss Mary Manning has been difficult to track down, but could be the daughter of former UNC Trustee and law professor John Manning.
Recorder of Crosses Mrs. H. C. Wills has also been elusive, but was married to the owner of H. C. Wills Hardware of Chapel Hill.
What were the Daughters doing in 1917? Their national convention featured an address on the KKK by Grace Meredith Newbill, UDC Historian and author of "Birthplace of the Ku Klux Klan," who described the Klan as "the greatest organization the world has ever known."
The minutes also mention the recently deceased Mrs. S. E. F. Rose more than a dozen times. She was another UDC Historian, Klan enthusiast, and author of "The Ku Klux Klan or the Invisible Empire." archive.org/stream/cu31924…
The Ohio Division reported that they had donated copies of Rose's book and other pro-Klan books to local libraries.
The Tennessee Division reported that a bronze memorial tablet had been dedicated at the birthplace of the Klan.
The Mississippi Division reported that proceeds from Mrs. S. E. F. Rose's KKK book had funded a memorial gateway at the Jefferson Davis home.
The North Carolina Division reports that they successfully lobbied for a pension increase for confederate vets, established 4 new children's chapters, and completed an endowment fund for the NC Room in Richmond Museum, which holds a "genuine Ku Klux banner."
I've seen the banner mentioned a few places in #NCUDC documents, here's a description of it from the NCUDC 1905 state convention.
The 1906 #NCUDC convention minutes report that the Klan banner was purchased with funds raised by each chapter, a total of $52.94 (almost $1,500 in 2018 dollars). The Greensboro chapter engaged a German engraver to produce this postcard reproduction.
