I'm one of the Amazon employees quoted in this NYT article.

I want to add to @kateconger's reporting and provide more context on WHY I decided to take this action and to be so public about it.

Climate change is the issue of our lifetimes. 1/X

As @RevYearwood so eloquently put it, climate change is about "HUMANITY," about justice. It's also an issue of our national security, health, safety, economy. Climate change is changing & will change everything. It's effecting everything we care about. 2/x
From the devastating floods in Kerala, India to the #CampFire in CA, we're living through the climate crisis as it destroys communities and kills people living their lives. It's hitting the most vulnerable among us. 3/x independent.co.uk/news/science/t…
I've cried almost every time I've watched this incredible truth-to-power speech by @GretaThunberg at the U.N. plenary in Katowice, Poland a few days ago. "We cannot solve a crisis without treating it like a crisis." 4/x "
The technology and solutions to climate change are, to a large extent, known and available. And each one of us, in whatever way we can, need to be part of the cultural shift underway to make this a political reality because we're running out of time. 5/x
[I deleted a tweet about the number of years re the IPPC report because I'd written 12 years, when it should have been 22, and didn't want misinformation to spread. Will send updated tweet in a moment]
According to the IPCC report we have about 12 years.

“Avoiding the most serious damage requires transforming the world economy within just a few years" 6/x

Millions of lives could be saved by tackling climate change, according to a report by the World Health Organization earlier this month. There is So. Much. To. Gain. 7/x

Climate change requires bold, visionary leadership of every company and every government in the world that matches the urgency of the challenge before us. 8/x
Amazon doesn't have a plan for addressing the disruptions posed by climate change, and how it is reducing its company-wide dependence on fossil fuels. I'm hoping the shareholder resolution will help change that. 9/x
In the NYT article, a rep from Amazon said they "have set a goal to power our global infrastructure with 100 percent renewable energy." When? How? I can't fathom an Amazon employee walking into a meeting without a launch date and milestones for their business plans. 10/x
From a purely cynical, self-interested standpoint, Amazon would benefit from a climate plan: "There could be $23 trillion of global economic losses a year in the long term without rapid action." 11/x theguardian.com/environment/20…
"This permanent economic damage would be almost four times the scale of the impact of the 2008 global financial crisis." 12/x "theguardian.com/environment/20…
From the U.S. Climate Report:

“[I]f significant steps are not taken to rein in global warming, the damage will knock as much as 10 percent off the size of the American economy by century’s end.” 12/x

nytimes.com/2018/11/23/cli…
“The report puts the most precise price tags to date on the cost to the UX economy of projected climate impacts: $141 billion from heat-related deaths, $118 billion from sea level rise and $32 billion from infrastructure damage by the end of the century, among others." 13/x
Another report: "Companies are vastly underestimating how badly they’ll be hurt by climate change"14/x fastcompany.com/90279746/compa…
“The new normal of climate change–from increases in flooding & hurricanes to intense wildfires–is already costing companies $$. But a new study suggests they’re underestimating future climate risk to their biz, & vastly underreporting the financial implications to investors.”15/x
The writing is on the wall: the old, fossil-fuel economy is dying. Even the oil industry knows this. It's just a matter of time. And time is crucial. Companies that jump on and drive the new economy will be the ones with the competitive advantage. 16/x
Because Amazon operates at such massive scale, and has a culture of tackling tough problems, imagine the possibilities if it decided to take bold leadership on climate change. And we need bold leadership. Everywhere. Now. 17/17
