ISSUE 1: The definition of “transgender” in the Bill lacks legal clarity in definition, which places the onus on individuals to prove that the proposed law applies to them or omits persons altogether #StopTransBill2018 1/1/3
A legal distinction between transgender and intersex persons is missing but is necessary to cater to their specific needs. Intersex- and transgender-specific provisions required but missing. #StopTransBill2018 1/2/3
Eg: an embargo on any sex "assignment" surgeries on intersex minors and providing hormone blockers to transgender or gender nonconforming children would be conflicting clauses if proper distinction is not made #StopTransBill2018 1/3/3
ISSUE 2: A District Screening Committee is empowered to issue Transgender Identity Certificates. This is highly offensive and constitutes a human rights violation. Gender identity is inherent and cannot be certified by an external other! #StopTransBill2018 2/1/3
Forces a person to out themselves as transgender via their identity documents even if they “pass” as their correct gender. #StopTransBill2018 2/2/3
Not all transgender persons wish to claim the legal/gender identity of "transgender." This is a forced identifier. #StopTransBill2018 2/3/3
Issue 3 The process for change in documents starts with applying to the screening committee for a transgender identity certificate. This certificate allows a person only to change documents to "transgender" and access "surgery." #StopTransBill2018 3/1/5
2/ A subsequent medical certificate is required to change documents from “transgender” to "man" or "woman" and change ones name. Only a change in the first name allowed. #StopTransBill2018 3/2/5
3/ This is an unnecessarily convoluted and traumatizing process for a person already disadvantaged and finding it hard to navigate the system #StopTransBill2018 3/3/5
4/ It forces a person into surgery that they often cannot afford or may not want (not all trans persons want to undergo surgery or other gender-affirming procedures) in order for their documents to reflect their identity #StopTransBill2018 3/4/5
5/ The Bill robs a transgender person of their right to change their entire name. There is no law preventing a person from doing so. #StopTransBill2018 3/5/5

There should also be an advisory committee consisting of women from all marginalised sections so that our concerns don't get sidelined.
@IndiaMeToo Policy changes need to think of accessibility, literacy and the institutions should be local so that survivors can engage with tools directly without going through an expensive and traumatic police, legal system.
@IndiaMeToo Representation at all levels - legal, medical, decision making shall be made mandatory i.e., they should rework on the composition of panels, committees and groups that are set up.

@IndiaMeToo @DivyaKandukuri_ 2) Raya’s list was not even recognized as India’s #MeToo moment. It was crushed & derailed by unfair positing of “due process” vs “naming” which was equated to shaming then. But today naming is being applauded according to convinience.
@IndiaMeToo @DivyaKandukuri_ 3) Statements were made by feminists with huge social capital distancing themselves from the list and cautioning against it. How was that not victim blaming? It induced trauma to not just the one who made the list but in all the survivors who named their predators

@IndiaMeToo First and foremost step towards achieving a way is- To acknowledge own's own privilege and stop occupying all the space.
1) Acknowledge privilege
2) Re-distribution of resources- Provide resources you have to the marginalised without acting like a 'saviour' +
@IndiaMeToo 3) Pass on the mic and amplify the voices of marginalised using your social capital
4) Instead of coming to us to 'reform/civilize us'- reform your own casteist, rascist, transphobcic, ableist households +
@IndiaMeToo 5) Don't teach us your methods of activism as they won't apply in our social locations, instead, learn our methods which are more inclusive.
6) Just stay silent wherever you need to be i.e., when it is not your place to teacher and listen
7) ACT on what you learn
