I ♥️ that @JenSiebelNewsom has asked to be called "first partner" instead of first lady. I ♥️ that at today's swearing in of @GavinNewsom as governor, she read a poem by @cilantroman that was a mix of Spanish & English. The message is clear: here in CA, we celebrate one another.
As Newsom began taking his oath, a protestor began chanting something and was escorted out. As he began his address, Governor Newsom thanked the protestor and referred to him as a "participant in democracy." Real leaders aren't threatened by free speech; they're ennobled by it.
I absolutely love that during his speech, Governor Newsom's two year old son spent some time in his arms and is apparently now toddling around the stage.
Newsom's speech fills me w/ hope. He talked about how the people are losing ground to industry in a way I've never heard before & feels important. Dems should build that into a platform that extends beyond better healthcare & takes on gun lobby, private prisons, stagnating wages.
