I don’t think @GlennThrush is wrong about this. Much of what this White House does is about keeping Trump in his personal happy space. He hated criticism from boosters on AM talk radio, so he shut down government agencies over his wall. He hates appearing as if “staff” —...
...that is, Trump’s own appointees — are “managing” him on foreign policy, so he instantly took Turkish President Erdogan’s hint and declared a surprise US withdrawal from Syria. He loves the adulation of crowds at campaign rallies, so he did dozens of them last year,...
...sometimes barely mentioning the candidates he was ostensibly campaigning for. Trump can’t do the job of being President — he doesn’t know enough, and the subject matter & routine bores him — and he is miserable to be around when he’s unhappy. So...
...White House staff and most of his administration exert themselves to give him things to do that make him happy, and limit activities that make him unhappy. There are other motivations behind administration policy as well, of course.
Trump’s visceral distaste for nonwhite immigrants, for example, is obvious and entirely genuine. But @dandrezner had this right a long time ago. A big part of Trump administration policy and daily activities is mostly about taking care of Trump.
