This is not a fact check. It's a bad take, @AP @AP_Politics, a false check.
When two sides hit a budget impasse, they pass continuing resolutions to continue status quo as negotiations continue.
Shutdowns happen since 1995 only when one side refuses CRs to change status quo...
2/ In 1995, Gingrich & Dole refused to pass a status quo continuing resolution. Their CR included Medicare premium increases, environmental deregulation & a balanced budget requirement.
Clinton held out for status quo and negotiation.
Conclusion: GOP caused shutdowns for 5 weeks.
3/ The 2013 shutdown was similar: Obama, McConnell, and Boehner had a deal for the basic status quo with some cutts, but Sen @tedcruz and the tea party House members blew up that deal in order to defunding the ACA.
Conclusion: the GOP caused a shutdown for two weeks.
4/ Jan 2018: Democrats rejected a CR, pushing for the change in the status quo for immigration reform and DACA.
After just one weekend, the Dems quickly folded.
Conclusion: the Dems caused a one-day furlough shutdown.
(Softball more than hardball).
5/ @AP_Politics, if you can jog your memory, someone said this last month: “I will be the one to shut it down. I’'m not going to blame you for it.”
Trump & GOP House rejected status quo CRs, and we are 3 weeks into a shutdown over Trump's wall.
Conclusion: the GOP caused it.
6/ Unfortunately this fact-check tweet came from a faceless @AP_politics media account w/ no real accountability. The account is run by AP's Washington bureau. Who might explain this bad fact-check?
@jpaceDC @khennessey @stevenpsloan @nbenac @JonLemire @ZekeJMiller?
