Time for my yearly roundup of gender ratios in animated features! I look at the top grossing US animated movies and count male:female characters with a name and at least one line of dialog.
Note: this is not a judgement about the quality of the movie, just looking at the raw data. For years, the average has been 11 male characters: 4 female characters. How does this year stack up?
COCO male: 12, female: 8 -- a 3:2 ratio
Far from parity, but not bad, COCO!
INCREDIBLES 2: male: 18, female: 7
Pixar is always heavily skewed male. This movie is much better than some of theirs but still more than twice as many male characters. Also Edna Mode is voice by a man.

The grand totals
male characters: 152, female characters: 99
Much better than it's been in the past! No where near parity, but a few of those movies helped make up for the others. We still have (help me, math peeps) 50% more male than female.

These numbers do not represent how large those parts were. I suspect even those films that reached parity still gave significantly more lines to male characters. But encouraging to see more female characters all around. 2019 GOAL: make 50% of your characters female or non-binary!
