/ @ROWGHANI has taught me a lot about navigating the crazy startup world—and specifically, about being a CEO. He wrote a great article on the second phase of a startup CEO’s job. blog.ycombinator.com/the-second-job…
/ I’ve also learned great lessons through my successes and failures. One being that CEOs must know what they’re good—and more importantly, not good at. I’m not good at business operations.
/ I’ve learned this the hard way, but now I have a stellar Chief Business Officer and operations team. Since it isn't a strength of mine, when building Atrium, I knew that I needed to invest in it early.
/ Once you’ve solved for what you’re not good at, focus on what you are good at. I like GTM strategy and sharing stories through content. I like developing a vision with clear metrics and sharing the stories of that success or failure with my peers to learn from each other.
/ It’s on you as CEO to create that vision and the company’s mission—and then translate that mission into metrics to ensure each function, team, and individual can relate back to the mission.
/ But as the operations and metrics are put into place and the company grows, don’t become disconnected from your people. I like holding skip-level roundtables to solicit feedback and stay connected to my employees, their projects, and their pains.
/ Lastly, find a mentor. @ROWGHANI has been an amazing mentor for me and many others. I’ve tried to be like him and earn startup karma points by helping founders whenever I can. Read more about what I’ve learned from Ali and how I’ve put it into practice atrium.co/blog/startup-c…
/ And if you’re going to SaaStr Annual in Feb, I’ll be speaking more in-depth on this topic and the evolving role of the CEO so sign up for my session!
