Ivanka Trump may be the next @WorldBank President.

This is a great time to be teaching Politics of Development!

And by chance, next week is the week on global governance 👏. For anyone wanting some background reading on how to understand what's going on, here's a thread. 1/10
Robert Wade's "The Art of Power Maintenance " is great for understanding how the West has made sure power is concentrated in the World Bank, IMF & G20 rather than UN bodies, & how it politically controls WB/IMF despite pressures for democratization. 2/10 tandfonline.com/doi/abs/10.275…
There's also a section specifically on how the World Bank/IMF vote reform was manipulated to ensure minimal shifts in power and how Obama managed to make sure @JimYongKim became the next WB prez in 2012 depsite @NOIweala being the favorite among @WorldBank board members. 3/10
There are also illuminating papers by the Bretton Woods Inst themselves (e.g. the "Sacred Cows" paper on how there's no need for change in theory, Ostry's paper on neolib in IMF). On how BWI's have changed since GFC, there's Grabel's 2018 book on Productive Incoherence ... 4/10
... and Strand & Retzl on BWI voice reforms. On desirable further reform of the IFIs: @B_Eichengreen & @NgaireWoods on IMF and Ocampo and @UNCTAD both on the global financial architecture generally. @BenedicteBull & McNeill are good on impact of IFI market multilateralism. 5/10
There are also excellent TWAIL (Third World Approaches to International Law) scholars on the reading list, such as Antony Anghie, Sundhya Pahuja and J. T. Gathii who in different ways highlight the imperial character of international law and its "civilizing mission". 6/10
On the West-East "rebalancing"/new role of BRICS in international gov. there's @JanNoParking, Thomas Muhr, and @iwallerstein with different perspectives - and ofc papers on roles of new dev banks, e.g. @rajiv_biswas, @AAbdenur (on @NDB_int), @stephanygj, Xiao Ren (on AIIB). 7/10
The week is not only about the global financial architecture; can't talk about global gov without talking about the political economy of the UN system and global goals. On how SDGs were developed there's great readings by @sfparr, Barbara Adams and Devaki Jain (on women)... 8/10
...critical takes by Heloise Weber, Gilbert Rist, Ashwani Saith, @sanjaygreddy...On who shapes UN outomes, there's @CGarsten & Jacobsson on corporate globalization, @janecarant on unheard voices - and some civil society contributions. 9/10
There's also an excellent paper on where to place UN institution (+@WorldBank) on a left-right spectrum (by @joshidevina & @ronikayodell) and a paper by M. Karshenas specifically on @UNCTAD.

Let me know if you want more details. And if you have stuff to add, please do!

10/10
And by chance, yesterday a special issue on "Beyond Bretton Woods: Complementarity and Competition in the International Economic Order" just came out in Development & Change! Looking forward to reading this. Ft. Ilene Grabel, Barbara Fritz, Eric Helleiner, Kevin Gallagher & more.
