EPP Spitzenkandidat Weber positions his German member parties—the CDU & CSU—as parties of „the centre.“ He warns against Salvini, Kaczynski & Farage by name. He does not, however, mention EPP member Fidesz or Hungary‘s Orban. Nor does Bild push to question him about it.
Weber rules out an Article 50 extension beyond the 2019 European Parliament elections, saying that it is inexplicable that someone like Farage should represent Europe as a parliamentarian. Although, the EU27 Member States are key to any decision here.
Weber stands behind the Brexit deal as negotiated, says UK decision needs to be respected but that membership must remain more advantageous than non-membership: „Dear Brits, please decide, finally, what you want.“
On foreign policy, Weber talks tough on the challenges Europe faces in Trump, China, Putin‘s interference in western elections & specifically the Brexit referendum—and singles out Germany‘s previous Chancellor Gerhard Schröder for his coziness with the Kremlin.
Finally, Weber dubs the AfD as the „German Brexit Party.“
