@PhilippeReines right now on @chrislhayes, pointing out that Comey felt obligated to announce he was re-opening the Clinton email server investigation 10 days before the election, but *did not* feel obligated to tell Americans that "Donald Trump was up to his neck in Russians." +
Reines says Comey (and rest of IC, presumably) assumed Clinton wd win, and the dirt on Trump cd be dealt with later. But if they 'gave Clinton a pass' they'd be hung out to dry by disappointed GOP. Makes total sense. But life sometimes is strange. Trump won ! NOW WHAT SHD IC DO ?
Obviously, they couldn't stop collecting intelligence on the new POTUS, about whom they already had massive concerns, *but they didn't want it known that they were doing so.* Events have developed since then in such a way that the IC now feels able (indeed, compelled)
to disclose the existence of CI investigation. But they want to cover their tracks, and obscure the early history of the CI investigation, in part so Americans don't start to yell "wait, wait, you KNEW and let us elect this guy ??" So, they've seized on the concatenation
of events May 9-12 (Comey fired, Lavrov/Kislyak in Oval, Holt interview) as something they can sell to us as the logical *starting point* of the CI investigation. That origin story of the CI investigation is bogus, and I expect will soon be superseded by a more honest account.
