I've been rewatching Red Dwarf from the beginning for the first time in about 15 years and it holds up RIDICULOUSLY well. Here are my discoveries watching it in my 30s:
It is WOKE AF. It's an all-male cast in the beginning, sure, but their attitudes to women are explored in a way that feels so current. Rimmer is a proper incel and is criticised for this constantly. Lister is shown to be a proper ally who respects women as equals.
And in an all-male cast in an 80s sitcom as unusual as it is to see woke attitudes towards women the cast is actually diverse. In seasons 1 and 2 the core cast of four is 50% POC.
Here's something else I noticed: Chris Barrie is fucking BRILLIANT. They're all great but I didn't realise what a phenomenal performance he gave as Rimmer. It's nuanced, entirely believable and so consistent. If this was the US he'd have, like, 10 Golden Globes and Emmys.
Now, at the end of series 5, I'm very aware of how often Chris Barrie has it written in to the script that he gets his shirt off.
