Today we published a timeline of Steve King’s racist and nationalist comments. My reporter @tripgabriel, who did the interview with King, spent weeks combing records and going to Iowa to document his comments and interviewing people about King. nyti.ms/2RS05bS?smid=n…
Our intent was to examine how King had influenced Trump on white identity politics and the border wall, and how King’s once-fringe views had shaped Trumpism: attacks on immigrants, demagoguery about so-called others, support for priorities of white nationalists.
The timeline shows that Steve King’s racist comments aren’t something that “just popped up,” as GOP whip @stevescalise said Sunday. Read King over the years in his own words.

UPDATE: We decided to change the headline on the timeline after publication. The initial headline was, “A History of Steve King’s Racist Remarks.” I thought his remarks and actions, taken together, presented a portrait of racism. That was the intent of the original headline.
But some readers said the headline could have been clearer and more accurate about the content of the story. I listened and considered their points. We decided to broaden the headline a bit. It's now "Steve King's Racist Remarks and Divisive Actions: A Timeline."
