Our latest #infographic for the @UofAALES #EMEND project is here! Check out the full infographic here (ow.ly/hjQs30nknje) or read more below! #scicomm #sciart @NSERC_CRSNG @EllenMac_UofA @charlesnock (1/8)
First of all, what is EMEND? This is a @NSERC_CRSNG funded experimental harvest area where researchers are able to study the effects of retention #harvest strategies on biodiversity, soil properties + more. (2/8)
'Retention harvest' means keeping some trees either individually or as patches after harvest. This might help improve #conservation of #biodiversity within the area & can be used to mimic natural disturbance patterns. (3/8)
Over the last 15 yrs researchers have had the chance to start compiling the results. They found patches of trees left behind during harvest acted as 'life boats' for some #beetle and #plant species. Patches also promoted the survival of #wetland species like wood frogs. (4/8)
Researchers also found that leaving behind individual trees, rather than patches (called 'dispersed retention'), supported a greater range of species than clear-cuts and promoted the effectiveness of the 'lifeboat' patches. (5/8)
Complementing these beneficial advances in harvesting techniques, unharvested reserves remained important for some sensitive species like Canada Warblers, feathermoss, and several species of spider. (6/8)
Overall, these results show us that it is important to have a variety of forest types on the landscape. As next steps, researchers will be starting to look at the effects on different species not yet studied at #EMEND such as mammals and pollinators. (7/8)
EMEND is a #longterm study and work is planned to continue for a full stand rotation (80-100 years)! Much more news will be coming from this project and continuing to inform #forest #management practices. See and download the full infographic here: ow.ly/u08R30nkmWs (8/8)
We would also like to acknowledge that #EMEND would not be possible without the support of its essential partners: @CanforCorp, @DMI_PRPD, @NRCan, @UofAALES, @NSERC_CRSNG and @YourAlberta!
