The French company SAS Ÿnsect, which is a member of IPIFF, requested that the European Commission adopt Regulation 2023/58, which allows the market for frozen, dried, and powdery forms of Alphitobius diaperinus (small darkling beetle) as a new food.

The beetle will be added to bread, chocolate desserts, meat products, pasta & more. The news has caused a wave of dissatisfaction, and it was later revealed that the EC has also adopted other regulations allowing for the addition of yellow mealworm, locust & crickets to food.

A few words on how this spray is generated and why the #beetle is not harmed in the process:

Hydroquinone and hydrogen peroxide are secreted by specialized glands and stored in a tank. Other glands produce catalyst enzymes such as catalases and peroxidases. 1/7 Image
When the contents of the two glands are mixed, oxygen forms and in turn reacts with hydroquinone to convert it to benzoquinone. Pressure due to the buildup of oxygen then causes the hot mixture of water and benzoquinone to be expelled. 2/7 Image
The explosion chamber is made of a mixture of chitin, proteins and waxes, which protect the beetle’s soft interior from the chemical mix, the high temperatures and the pressure. To withstand the #explosive force, the blast consists of a series of micro-pulses. 3/7

Happy 130th Birthday to us!

The TTFNC was founded on July 10th 1891 in order to: “...give pleasure to its members by observation of animal, insect and plant life in Trinidad”.

This thread will revisit some key milestones in our long history! 1/n #130yearsofTTFNC Image
In 1892, the first issue of our peer-reviewed journal was published as an outlet for our members to publish interesting and novel #NaturalHistory observations. It continues to this day as "Living World, the Journal of the TTFNC". ttfnc.org/livingworld/in… 2/n #130yearsofTTFNC Image
The first issue of our journal included J. E. Tanner's breakthrough discovery that #leafcutter #ants (locally known as #bachacs) cultivate fungus & feed it to their larvae, rather than eating the leaves directly as previously thought. 🐜🌿🍄3/n #130yearsofTTFNC ImageImage

Dress for the job you want, not the job you have.

In this case, the job you have is coasting around on the forest floor at dusk and in darkness, squeezing under rocks and logs in search for a tasty bug body to feast on. The body can be alive or dead. Doesn't matter. /1 Image
The job you want is working as a DJ at an arthropod rave. You look killer in your neon greens and blues. Your songs get the arthropod bods wiggling inside their segmented exoskeletons. You hum to yourself as you strafe through the leaf litter. /2
You hear the applause in your head as your sharp mandibles crunch down on a baby frog. You imagine the strobing lights of your stage as the sun comes up and you edge under your flat shelter to await the night. The darkness. The Time of the Rave. /3

Wet and dry forests of the Otway Ranges (SE. Australia):
88 two square metre leaf litter samples (all 2019).
Average of >1,000,000 beetles/hectare in leaf litter in the ten most abundant #beetle families.
Almost half are from one family: Staphylinidae.
These 10 families are (top left to bottom right)
Staphylinidae
Ptiliidae
Curculionidae
Carabidae
Leiodidae
Hydrophilidae
Silvanidae
Corylophidae
Zopheridae
Melandryidae
If I use this data to extrapolate (like the vertebrate people have) then I would estimate more than THREE TRILLION ONE HUNDRED AND FIFTY BILLION beetles from the family Staphylinidae have been combusted in the 2019/20 eastern Australian fires so far.

Our latest #infographic for the @UofAALES #EMEND project is here! Check out the full infographic here (ow.ly/hjQs30nknje) or read more below! #scicomm #sciart @NSERC_CRSNG @EllenMac_UofA @charlesnock (1/8)
First of all, what is EMEND? This is a @NSERC_CRSNG funded experimental harvest area where researchers are able to study the effects of retention #harvest strategies on biodiversity, soil properties + more. (2/8)
'Retention harvest' means keeping some trees either individually or as patches after harvest. This might help improve #conservation of #biodiversity within the area & can be used to mimic natural disturbance patterns. (3/8)

And now I present: a thread based on my love of #science, #scicomm, and #animals, and the fact that I'm a huge #nerd:

The other day at the library, I got this book by Ann Tompert for my 2yo (2/?): amazon.com/Just-Little-Bi…
The premise: an elephant and a mouse want to ride a see-saw. #Physics has other ideas, so some other animals come to help. (3/?)
