We cracked open the New York State Executive Budget Briefing Book to see how much funding @NYGovCuomo is offering four-year #SUNY campuses. A thread on how he is continuing our multiyear budget crisis. budget.ny.gov/pubs/archive/f… @uupinfo @nysut

.@NYGovCuomo proposes to increase funding for all 22 #SUNY state-run campuses by $32 million. This is a drop in a very large and empty bucket. Operating costs are growing due to our recent (well-deserved) contract, and Cuomo doesn't want to pay them. What's the result?
Budget cuts and overworked employees at each campus. Take SUNY New Paltz, which faces a $4.5 million budget deficit. @NYGovCuomo's refusal to #FundSUNYNow will mean that faculty and staff will be stretched to the limit as they work to serve students. recordonline.com/opinion/201812…
.@NYGovCuomo's budget is a death sentence for SUNY Fredonia, which may eliminate entire undergraduate programs to cope with its massive $12 million deficit. After years of budget cuts, Fredonia is now cutting into bone. observertoday.com/news/page-one/…
At SUNY Stony Brook, @NYGovCuomo's budget will continue its long-simmering crisis. It faced a $35 million deficit in 2017, cut humanities programs, and then enacted a hiring freeze in 2018 to close an $18 million deficit. newsday.com/opinion/editor…
(on Stony Brook's 2017 crisis, see here: insidehighered.com/news/2017/09/2…)
At Binghamton, New York State's "last-minute" decision to not pay for the UUP contract means that campus will have a $4 million budget hole going forward. Not good for its students. bupipedream.com/opinions/10128…
And at SUNY Plaatsburgh, administrators have been closing a $6.3 million deficit after closing a $2 million deficit the previous year. When campuses can't hire to fill vacancies due to budget shortfalls, students lose educational opportunities. pressrepublican.com/news/local_new…
Those are just five #SUNY campuses. Add up their budget deficits, and the total is $44.8 million. Again, @NYGovCuomo increased funding for all 22 campuses by only $32 million, which only cover the deficits at those five campuses (not even counting the other 17.
.@NYGovCuomo will tell you that he has increased #SUNY funding $7.6 billion since 2012. That's deliberating misleading - it includes all funding associated with SUNY, including things like construction. Funding for SUNY operations simply hasn't kept up with student needs.
And, notice how he is cutting funding to our community colleges by $28 million, which provide an essential educational pipeline for hundreds of thousands of students across the state. They clearly aren't a priority for him.
If @NYGovCuomo won't fund #SUNY, then we need our state legislators to do so. They must defend New York's public universities from his austerity policies which protect the wealth of his campaign donors in Manhattan. We hope they step up to the plate. #FundSUNYNow #UUP4ourSUNY
