A timely reminder that no president of the United States has the power or the right under the constitution to give a speech in the well of the House. That power resides with the Speaker. (Also the SOTU is not required to be a speech. It can be in writing.)
Oh, and either chamber would have to pass a resolution formally authorizing a speech anyway, so even McConnell, as badly as he might want to, can’t give Donald Trump the set he wants for his SOTU telecast. Welcome to the world of “Article 1 as intended.”
This is what it looks like when a Speaker uses the power of the office. We just became accustomed to weak speakers and “unitary executive” presidents, so we’re not used to it.
