Today marks one year since we launched the EU Energy Poverty Observatory in Brussels. What have we been up to in that time?

1⃣Created the largest single evidence base on #energypoverty anywhere in the world, spanning 1980s - now ➡️energypoverty.eu

2⃣ Developed specialist guidance for policymakers (local and national) to address #energypoverty in their domain:

We supplement this with face-to-face and virtual technical assistance, on all aspects of the phenomenon.
3⃣ We hosted a launch conference in Brussels with 400 international stakeholders. Our consortium members have attended numerous external events, working in cooperation with institutions such as @eumayors @EU_EESC and @EU_CoR to advance discussions on #energypoverty #fuelpoverty
4⃣ EPOV has assembled a collection of 4 primary indicators and 22 supporting indicators of #energypoverty, in order to capture the multidimensional aspects of the issue. The primary indicators can be viewed according to income, tenure, urbanisation density, and dwelling type.
5⃣ We have published a range of documents, including a pan-EU report on the state of play across Europe, and two case studies of successful #energypoverty measures:

France presented today its #energy and #climate strategy. It has four goals:
1 - To cut #energy consumption
2 - To turn away from #fossilfuels
3 - To diversify its #energy mix

The overall target of France's strategy for #energy and #climate is to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050 through cutting GHG emissions down significantly and also increasing carbon sinks
France wants to cut #CO2 emissions down to 227 Mt in 10 years by cutting final #energy consumption 14% and primary #energy from #fossilfuels by 35%. Also, increasing #renewable heating and doubling the #electricity from renewables. Note: transport emissions vanish by 2050.

Today marks 1 year since Hurricane María.

A year later, Puerto Rico is still in shambles.

Some things to advocate today:

1. PR is still a colony of the United States. The island deserves real self-determination. We must say that to fix it.

2. Climate change is an economic, environmental, and social justice issue.

From Hurricanes Katrina to María, communities that are already hard-pressed from historic inequities are often the most neglected in natural disasters.
3. To respond to devastating natural disasters, we should INVEST in rebuilding impacted communities with sustainable infrastructure (energy & otherwise).

Rebuilding should be treated as a moment to update & modernize.

Rebuilding things exactly as they were sets up for a repeat.
