Far-Left lies on Venezuela, as with Syria, Libya and Ukraine before it, always start with denying the civilians protesting agency. They all become agents of external powers, who are written out of their own country's narrative, and their positions are denied legitimacy.
These have never been minority movements, they represent the democratic aspirations of the overwhelming majority of the population. By recognising the legitimacy of these protests, the Far-Left has to concede that the imperialist/anti-imperialist binary worldview is flawed.
Same goes for war crimes. By admitting Assad carried out chemical weapons attacks, absolute opposition to any and all global humanitarian intervention becomes an immoral position, therefore war crimes denial is again used as the only option left to defend "anti-imperialist" dogma
So the left's response to human rights abuses & the repression of democracy in countries outside of the Western 'imperial orbit' as it were, becomes to justify and defend these regimes, because criticising them at all undermines who these people view as powerful vs powerless
The result becomes a ceaseless dehumanisation campaign, targeting the poorest and most vulnerable civilians on Earth. Victims of torture, starvation, brutality and oppression are denied agency, legitimacy, and humanity by those claiming to be fighting for the "global south"
For the Western “anti-imperialist” Far-Left, civilians in the global south having the temerity to demand a democratic future in a regime controlled by an anti-Western dictator, no matter how brutal or fascist, is a sentence that carries the death penalty.
Not only will they cheer on these murders, but will actively eke out a career making money off the blood of these people, racking up book deals and TV appearances denying or justifying the most unspeakable of human rights atrocities, but doing so in the name of "social justice"
There is little difference between this behaviour and that of the Far-Right. The significant difference on foreign policy here is the Far-Right tend to not hold the pathologically sick position that they are espousing these views out of concern for the people being slaughtered.
We are faced with a world in which fascism, totalitarianism and political violence are on the rise while liberal democracy is in retreat, with Putin is deploying his own special forces around the world to defend a growing alliance of genocidal dictators.
While supposedly serious pundits are defending isolationism as a political virtue, the global order is being changed to buttress & preserve the cruellest regimes on the planet. And make no mistake, Trump, MBS & Netanyahu are part of the same counterrevolutionary axis as Putin.
History will judge all of those who stood only in solidarity with the powerful the same, while the powerless were brutalised and oppressed under fascist jackboots, regardless of whether they wore brown shirts or draped themselves in red flags.
Time and time again, these words matter the most. Peace is not the absence of war, it is the presence of justice. Nobody safeguarding injustice for future generations should ever be forgiven for that crime.
Final thought: In the West, victims of Western-sponsored war crimes, most notably & most recently in Yemen, are at the very least universally recognised as victims. There is a special place in hell for those denying that same victimhood to people outside US spheres of influence.
If justice isn't a universal concept, then the entire concept is fundamentally null and void.
