1/ before the EU referendum, the majority of Eurosceptics promoted what would now be called a 'soft Brexit' and even the most strident Eurosceptics believed we should at least have a EU-UK FTA.
2/ yet now, a campaign of revisionist gaslighting has begun. "We knew what we wanted - no deal!" "No deal, no problem!" "Let's go WTO" 
3/ the question is - why? Who benefits?
4/ the only real benefits of a WTO brexit over a softer brexit are - more control over migration (which would limit UK citizens ability to live and work in the eu27) and would mean we don't automatically have to adopt EU rules and standards.
5/ but inward migration is dropping anyway, and also 'soft brexit' efta countries have mechanisms for better regulating migration: efta4uk.eu/fom-and-the-ee…
6/ and we will end up following many EU rules anyway due to the Brussels effect. All developed nations are increasingly doing so. At least as part of Efta/EEA we could help shape them. law.columbia.edu/news/2017/10/e…
7/ and given a hard brexit poses serious risks to UK services trade (one of our biggest money-spinners) what's the point? Cui Bono? Who benefits?
8/ we can only conclude that someone has been speaking to prominent Brexiteers in private (possibly foreign business lobbies) urging them to go WTO and recast any leaver who disagrees as a remainer in disguise. In exchange?
9/ would those politicians concerned be willing to submit themselves and those closest to them to forensic accounting methods? If a public body suggested they should, suspect many would pivot to promoting 🇳🇴🇨🇭 type arrangements. Thoughts? /End
