Everyone is dunking on Howard Schultz, and rightly so, among other things over his description of his own upward mobility as proof of how great American capitalism is. As many point out, our generation (I'm the same age) lived in an era of cheap, good public education 1/

In the US, basically as far back as the data go, city sizes have followed "Zipf's Law" -- the population of a metropolitan area is roughly inversely proportional to its national rank. LA roughly half of NY, Chicago roughly 1/3, etc. But not so in Australia 2/
Here's the top 5 metros in each country, normalized as shares of their combined population. That's NY, LA, Chicago, Dallas, Houston; Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Perth, Adelaide 3/

This is spot on from @econjared washingtonpost.com/outlook/2019/0…. There is a real debate among Dems about the best way to achieve shared goals; that's fine, as long as it doesn't turn into ad hominem attacks 1/
Health care is probably the key issue. Most progressive policy wonks would go for a single-payer system if it were on the table. But many (including me) worry that the politics of forcing people off private insurance onto a public program are too hard 2/
And many European countries achieve universal coverage with regulated/subsidized private systems, so that's a workable path. Now, it's OK to argue that we can go for all-out single payer and win, even if polling suggests otherwise 3/

This is so good and necessary. So many times I've seen creators of marginalized identities (and content featuring marginalized characters) held to an insanely higher standard of purity.
I have discussed this with several authors and content creators, who have deliberately de-diversified their work in recent years, because they know being held to a much higher purity standard than white guys writing about white guy things just isn't worth the hassle.
But few are willing to have these discussions, because the second you point out something like the double standard held for marginalized creators, you get hugboxed by bad faith pepes looking for ammo against SJW hysteria who are eager to welcome you into the fold.

The problem is not socialists.They have no place in US politics and won't. The problem is not capitalism. It worked well to make American the economic powerhouse of the world. The problem is rigged capitalism--which for 40 yrs the GOP has engineered with the help of some Dems.
Our system has been hijacked by the rich and powerful to serve them. With wages at effectively the same level as more than 4 decades ago and the minimum wage at effectively the same level as 6 decades ago, while the 1 percent get richer, everyone else is left behind.
Increases in productivity no longer translate into higher wages for workers. Companies don't use tax breaks to create jobs they use them to buy back stock and enrich top management and shareholders. Regulations are rolled back. Tax cuts help only the wealthy.
