A short thread on some of the things I believe do work...
Teachers meeting and greeting pupils at the doors of their classes
A DO NOW retrieval practice starter, which recursively builds in prior knowledge
Verbally setting your lesson in context
Using a Big Question that is highly aspirational in places of objectives, which dampen expectations
Modelling and the use of a visualiser
A teacher led content input.
Chanting for new concepts, terms, definitions .... so students engage with the learning
Reading together as a clas and listening to a teacher read out loud
Placing key words in their context so deepen and broaden understanding
Big lectures
Allowing teachers the time and space to develop subject expertise. Allowing for lashings of departmental time.
Freeing staff up to become part of an action research team that is whole school. Better still collaborating with other schools to create subject communities.
The use of knowledge organisers, whilst not THE silver bullet, are a powerful tool and not new....
Workbooklets
Whole-class marking pro-formas, whereby the feedback takes place in the lesson
