My condo “special general meeting” is about to start. It already feels contentious.
Backstory: the president does not play well with others and residents feel questionable decisions have been made by the board (the rest of whom are regular, nice humans).
Average age in room: 70
They are adding two rows of chairs as people keep coming in. The last regular AGM I went to had half the people and some fighting so this is looking like there will be some action.
Secretary has had to announce the time three times because president hasn’t turned up his hearing aid and keeps shouting “what??”.
Now that he has heard he’s starting the meeting
Interesting. The board has brought a lawyer. He’s talking now and is telling us how things are going to proceed.
He’s also told us to turn off phones.

Yeahhh no.

Also talking to us like we are children.
Someone said they can’t hear. Lawyer said no interrupting.
Board lady (who is buds with President) is being super condescending to lady who asked question. Other nice board member tries to intervene to make conversation better. It worked for now.
Two board members look hugely uncomfortable as president and bud lecture residents. One has moved his chair 6 feet away from rest of group
Board member just referred to owners with a poo poo tone, as “cohorts” like there’s a secret group against them. People are MAD and are inisotong we are to be called owners.
Buddy lady is really red right now.
Current president is lecturing former president and sneering. This is gross.

Board member who distanced himself is now staring at ceiling.
Owner just called board irresponsible for not raising condo fees to help with inflation and increased costs. Everyone nodding in agreement. Mostly seniors.

If only more people saw property taxes this way too.
President just pointed out that 18 units are rentals. Oh the horror.
Cue renters are evil dialogue.
But it’s okay that we collectively own a unit as a corporation and rent it out. Those renters are okay.
Now Buddy is playing the “we are just volunteers” card to explain not knowing how to do stuff and why they aren’t experts. Even though they whole tone of this meeting is that they know best and we need not question
Buddy lady just referred to an owner speaker she didn’t agree with as “sweetie”

“No Sweetie. You don’t understand.”
Lawyer is so not a moderator. He’s totally repping for the two board people everyone is so upset with.
Plot twist: one distancing board member (very old) who hasn’t spoken at all finally spoke up to call president and buddy “liars” and secretive.
Now we are fighting about sidewalk salt. President keeps saying he’s picked the best eco friendly pet friendly stuff and we should question. Resident asked how many of us are having issues with dogs’ feet. 25 people put hands up.
*Shouldn’t question
Lawyer adjourned meeting. People are mad. AGM is in April. Stay tuned for more fun.
