Today I have some advice for how you, Ralph Northam, can keep your job.
Full disclosure - I'm betting that you'll keep your job so I have a personal interest here.
Here goes.
Step 1: Don't resign.
Step 2: Don't get impeached.
You just have to ignore the haters.
When Hillary Clinton - or any Democrat says "You must resign," what she's really saying is "I want you to resign."
What does resigning do for you?
Nothing!
More than that - Democrats won't have anything to do with you ever again.
Unless they start depositing millions into some bank accounts in the Caymans, you really have no reason to care what they think.
Next - don't get impeached.
This may require some political maneuvering. Here's what you should do.
This line isn't for Democrats, who now hate you and couldn't care less about the law.
This line is for Republicans.
1) It's true - and the GOP likes to be seen as the party of the rule of law;
2) It's helpful to the President, who might be impeached on weak charges himself
3) It's helpful to the GOP, which would like you to be an albatross for Dems nationwide
"What Ralph Northam did thirty-five years ago was appalling and unacceptable. He should resign. However, it is not a high crime or misdemeanor, and does not provide a basis for impeachment."
Meaning? YOU'RE SAFE.
Appoint some Republicans to various important boards and commissions.
Throw some largesse to them.
Signal that while you remain in office, you'll be more helpful to the GOP than to Democrats.
That will force them to disavow you.
Instead, stay a Democrat. You are more useful that way.
If you do all this, you won't be impeached.
And you won't have to resign.
Congratulations, Governor Northam! May you serve a full term.
