Hi @RepChrisStewart!

A few questions for you based on this interview.

1) What specific emergency powers could a Democrat president use to unilaterally "fight" climate change?

2) How would the exercise of those powers be constitutional?

3) Why do you think a Democrat President would look at Trump's use of emergency powers to decide whether or not to use emergency powers for climate change?

4) Why wouldn't the 31 ongoing national emergencies give a future Democrat President the necessary cover?
5) President Trump just used emergency powers to sanction the Venezuelan government. Why is that more of a national emergency than the crisis at our southern border?

Today I have some advice for how you, Ralph Northam, can keep your job.

Full disclosure - I'm betting that you'll keep your job so I have a personal interest here.

Here goes.

Step 1: Don't resign.
Step 2: Don't get impeached.
Step 1 may seem difficult - but it isn't!

You just have to ignore the haters.

When Hillary Clinton - or any Democrat says "You must resign," what she's really saying is "I want you to resign."

What does resigning do for you?

Nothing!
Let's be real - you won't win elected office again.

More than that - Democrats won't have anything to do with you ever again.

Unless they start depositing millions into some bank accounts in the Caymans, you really have no reason to care what they think.

Ralph Northam could be a real problem for Democrats

They need him to resign, but he has little incentive to do so

He’s got three years left in his term and no hope of any political career beyond that
Impeachment requires a trial, and 2/3rds of the Senate under Virginia law

Not easy

If Virginia Dems can’t find the votes, Northam could be in a position to make serious demands in exchange for resigning
Apparently he’s not up for the fight

One thing in the way of effective action on our #climate crisis (and our toxics crisis, our biodiversity crisis, our plastics in the ocean crisis, not to mention our violence, war, poverty, racism, & sexism crises) is a terrible misunderstanding of who/what we are.
Many people speak about this as a spiritual/moral crisis and I agree. But, the misunderstanding I want to talk about is at once simpler and more profound.
(Note - when I say 'we' I mean those of us acculturated into the western industrial growth mindset, which in evolutionarily relevant timescales has only been around for a fleeting instant. Humans haven't always thought this way, and not all humans alive today think this way.)

Hi guys! @AtteHarjanne and me just published a paper "Abandoning the concept of #renewable #energy" at Energy Policy. In it, we argue that the concept of #renewableenergy (RE) is outdated. 1/

What we argue here is that using what is basically a 1970s-era definition of renewable energy, and conflating "renewable" with "sustainable" or even "clean," is becoming more a hindrance than a help in meeting the main challenge of the early 2000s - #climatechange . 2/
We argue that the concept of RE was largely set in stone well before the magnitude of #climate challenge, and actual problems with some sources that are technically renewable, was understood. This has resulted to, e.g., using the "renewable" label to cover all bioenergy. 3/

Just returned from Bangkok, where nations made little progress towards finalising the Paris agreement on climate change that aims to limit global temperature rises over the next 80 years.

It was my first @UN #climate change rodeo and there were a few things I wasn't aware of
Under Paris, countries agreed to a fairly detailed set of promises to keep global temperature rises under 2C by 2100.

It was the first time all nations - both developed and developing economies - signed up to the same set of climate rules. But they weren't binding
Parties gave themselves in effect 3 years to come up with a text agreed by everyone, ratified, and translated into national law on a state-by-state basis. The idea is the accord isn't legally binding, but the rulebook it provides could be on a national level

Good questions @RedsforNamesake. If confronting #climate change is your priority, it is imperative to ramp up carbon-free energy asap.

1. NJ will now ramp up renewable energy from 13% in 2017 and 20% by 2020 under old RPS to 35% by 2025 & 50% by 2030. Impressive leadership.
2. To ensure that this new clean energy replaces fossil fuels and contributes to #climate mitigation goals, NJ's new laws also make payments to ensure the continued operation of 3 South Jersey nuclear reactors that currently supply 31% of the state's electricity consumption.
2. Cont.: That measure is essential and ensures that nearly all of the new clean energy growth over the next 12 years builds on top of the fossil-free foundation provided by the state's existing nuclear plants.
